Please Do NOT pick up and/or carry your bird (waterfowl especially) by the neck/head. Either cradle the bird in your arms carefully, or hold it gently by the feet.
If you have an idea that the bird taken is one you might want to get mounted, Do NOT let your dog retrieve it for you. Handle the bird yourself.
Do Not throw the bird in the bottom of your boat/back of truck for the ride home. Keep it away from the other birds taken that day as well. Remember that the feathers are the most important thing to keep safe. Bills, feet, bones, etc. can be replaced, or repaired, but feathers are not.
Damaged or broken wings are often easily repairable. Birds with shot or broken wings will still make for a beautiful mount.
Birds with broken bills are also mountable. Birds Forever uses only the latest technology to cast and mold replicas of all species of bird, making your piece flawless.
Bloodstained birds should be left as is. Let the taxidermist handle all stains during the mounting process.
All Birds go through a molting phase in the fall and winter months as they prepare for mating season each spring. As a general rule the better birds are taken late in the winter season. Also the older more mature birds, the better their plumage.
Freeze your bird as soon as possible. The best way to freeze a bird is to wrap the head and feet in wet paper towels, then tuck the head under one of the wings whenever possible. Owls and hawks do not have a long enough neck for this to happen, therefore try and keep the feathers folded in the right direction. Because birds are very delicate, they deteriorate quickly. As they deteriorate, feathers fall out and the bird is ruined. It is imperative that birds are frozen as soon as possible.
Take care not to fold any feathers, wings, tail. Also, if your bird has a long tail like a turkey or pheasant, be careful with the tail. After the bird is frozen, the tail feathers can snap off if you are not careful.
Birds CAN stay in the freezer up to one year without being damaged. To avoid freezer burn, do NOT put your bird in a frost-free freezer. Freezer burn will result in feather loss and the bird will be permanently damaged. Wrapping the head and feet in wet paper towels prevents freezer burn.
Some people prefer to take a ladies nylon stocking with them on their hunts, and tie a knot one end, then slip the bird head first into the stocking. This is fine, but remember to wrap the head and feet in wet paper towels, and still tuck the head under the wing when possible.
If you want your Turkey tail to look beautiful, take it to a taxidermist where it will be prepared professionally. Proper washing and chemical treatment will ensure a beautiful display forever.
"DO NOT GUT" your bird. Please freeze the entire bird; do not try and skin your bird for your taxidermist. It is essential that important parts of your bird remain in tact.
If you want to keep the meat from your bird, i.e turkey/pheasant, please bring your bird to the taxidermist quickly, and let them take out the meat for you.. You might want to contact them before your hunt if you are expecting to bring something back worth mounting to ensure they will be available to take it directly to them.
Remember that you CAN ship your birds overnight frozen to send them to a taxidermist. Do not just let anyone mount your bird just because they are close to you. It will be worth paying the shipping charges, and then driving to get your bird, to ensure a beautiful mount you will enjoy forever. Contact us if you have any questions on how to ship your birds to us.
